Special Olympics
Eastern Prairie Special Olympics is part of a global organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities. Through year-round sports training and athletic competition in 19 sports, Special Olympics promotes healthy living, physical fitness, and the joy of athletic participation for athletes ages 8 and up. Students can participate with athletic competitions, social events, or special events & fundraising.
Athletic competition - Athletic events are in the spring, so Illinois students who intern may assist athletes with sports event planning and management including: site planning, marketing, and promotion. This opportunity should appeal to EDUC 201 students interested in athletics, sports management, coaching & mentoring, public relations, and working with special populations.
Social Events - Illinois students will be paired with athletes for mentoring and social interaction at events typically held on campus. Students from EDUC 201 can help plan, organize, and execute these events. This opportunity should appeal to Illinois students interested in event planning, public relations, leadership, mentoring, and working with special populations
Special events and fundraising - Students who intern will be able to work with athletes to plan the October Golf Outing and the late winter Polar Plunge. Illinois students will work with athletes to organize fundraising and public relations efforts including recruiting volunteers and participants to events; working with publicity, local news agencies, and grant funding agencies. This opportunity should appeal to students interested in media, sports management, event planning, public relations, fundraising, and working with special populations.
IMPORTANT: It is a 45 minute bus ride to and from their offices. 3-4 hours per week is required.
