CU Immigration Forum
The C-U Immigration Forum (CUIF) is an alliance of volunteers dedicated to creating an immigrant-friendly community in Champaign County. Activities focus on helping immigrants and unaccompanied minors who are struggling with economic and physical deprivation or other disabling circumstances. Students can work on mapping immigrant-owned business, business and entrepreneurship for immigrant youth, C-U immigration forum radio and tv, or citizenship workshops. (IMPORTANT: students should have a resume and be ready to be interviewed for this placement. There will be orientation and training before you begin and you must be ready to volunteer 3-4 hours per week.)
Mapping Immigrant-Owned Business will include students identifying and interviewing immigrant business owners. This opportunity is especially interesting to students who are want to learn about original research, the role of small business in communities, and urban planning.
Business and Entrepreneurship for Immigrant Youths will include students working with immigrant youths as they master business practices. This opportunity is of special interest to Illinois students interested in immigrant rights, mentoring, entrepreneurship, and business.
C-U Immigration Forum Radio & TV will include students proposing subject matter for radio/TV production and appear on the program posing questions to the experts. This opportunity may appeal to Illinois students who are interested in educational media, researching topics on immigration, media & democracy, public service communication, and radio/TV production.
Citizenship Workshops will include students helping to organize the workshops, and provide assistance as needed. This opportunity should appeal to students who want to better understand government policy, democratic citizenship, the legal system, and workshop planning.
